Been a little while since I have done a fast food recreation and I wanted to share this one with you all! I used to love the Burger King chicken fries before I went vegan so I figured it was time I recreate them. these air fried tofu fries are perfect for dipping and so delicious.
I have been wanting to make this recipe for a long time and I am so glad I finally got around to it. These are very easy to make and were very easy to veganize! Ground up tofu with some seasonings is the base, it is then coated in breadcrumbs, and air fried. They are a bit time consuming to make but you will have so many it is worth it!
Tofu for Chicken
In this recipe you will use super firm tofu. It is my favorite tofu because you do not need to press it. It has the highest amount of protein as well making this is a great source of plant based protein. The tofu is ground up in a food processor with egg replacer, breadcrumbs, and salt and pepper very easy! Also, because you use super firm tofu you don’t need as much breadcrumbs to bind it since it doesn’t have as much moisture. If you are a tofu skeptic don’t be scared! My non-vegan mom who doesn’t love tofu enjoyed these!
Air Frying vs Baking
I love my air fryer as I am sure some of you know by now. It does help to get things crispier in my opinion. My air fryer has a double basket so it does make it easier to air fry more at a time. If you wanted to bake these you definitely could. They would come out delicious just maybe not as crispy. However, I understand it is easier to just throw them all in the oven rather than wait to do multiple rounds of air frying.

Homemade Air Fried Tofu Fries FAQ
- Can these be frozen? I didn’t try. If you do it will probably change the texture of the tofu which isn’t necessarily a bad thing but just be aware of that.
- Can this be made gluten free? Yes, just gluten free breadcrumbs.
- How long do these last? Up to 4 days in the fridge.
- Can these be made soy free? You can try to use this recipe to form into the “chicken” fry shape but it may not work.
- How should I reheat them? You can pop them back in air fryer, microwave or an oven.
- What else can I eat these with? I put them in a bowl with some veggies and I also put them in a wrap either way was delicious!

Homemade Vegan Chicken Fries
Equipment
Ingredients
Tofu Chicken
- 1 package (16 ounce/454g) super firm tofu
- ½ cup (56g) breadcrumbs
- 2 egg replacers
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
Breading
- ¼ cup (32g) cornstarch
- ½ cup (120ml) nondairy milk, unsweetened and unflavored
- ¾ cup (84g) breadcrumbs
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon onion powder
- ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
- Spray Oil
Sauce
- 1 tablespoon maple syrup
- 2 teaspoons dijon mustard
- 1 tablespoon vegan mayonnaise
- 1 tablespoon ketchup
Instructions
- Into a food processor place the tofu, breadcrumbs, egg replacer, and salt and pepper. Process until it has formed into a thick uniform mixture. You should be able to make it into a ball with your hands.
- Scoop about 1 ½ tablespoons into your hand and roll it out into a long snake shape. Be careful not to make it too thin about 4-5 inches long. Repeat until all are made.
- Freeze for at least 15 minutes.
- In the meantime mix breadcrumbs with seasonings for the breading.
- After freezing coat one of the chicken fries in cornstarch, then dip in the nondairy milk, and roll in breadcrumbs. Set aside and repeat until all are coated.
- Spray generously with spray oil and place 4 to 5 in air fryer basket. Leave room so they do not overcrowd. I put extra chicken fries in the freezer while I waited for the others to be done.
- Airfry at 400°F (204°C) for 20 minutes or until crisp and golden. Repeat as many times as needed.
- To make the sauce combine all sauce ingredients into a small bowl. Add additional salt if desired.
- When the chicken fries are done enjoy them warm dipped in sauce. If they look a little dry you can always spray with more spray oil.

I want to make this and many more of your recipes but I don’t see the macros? I know you count calories and I do to🙂 Am I missing something? ❤️
plantifullybased
Hi Suzanne, I don’t offer nutritional info for the blog only because this blog wasn’t started for that reason and some people weren’t interested in that. I did start my separate youtube Plantifully Francesca that contains all macros and info so people would know that if they are on that channel there will be numbers. For this recipe of about 20 servings it comes out to 1454 cal/90.4P/164C/48F so about 74 cal/4,6P/8.4C/2.5F per fry but I would encourage you if you are calorie counting to weight everything out and track it in your app as different brands may have different nutritional information. Hope that helps!

This looks amazing and would love to try it! Is there any other ingredient that I could use instead of the egg replacer? Does flax work?
plantifullybased
yay hope you enjoy! sure you can use a flax egg just know of course it will change the texture make it a bit more seedy but will still be yummy
