if you are looking for a simple and delicious way to make some easy vegan fish tacos, look no further! simply made from hearts of palm, topped with pan fried corn, cabbage slaw, and vegan sour cream they are perfect.
A few months ago I was in Philly and I went to Bar Bombón, which is delicious, and we got vegan fish tacos. I was so surprised with how delicious they were and knew I wanted to recreate something at home. The best part about these is how truly easy they are to make and heart of palm does such a great job of mimicking a white fish like cod. Paired with lots of robust flavors these easy vegan fish tacos need to be a summer staple!
What are Hearts of Palm?
Heart of palm is a vegetable that comes from the inner core and growing bud of some palm trees. There are a few plants like coconuts and peach palm that the farmers will harvest hearts of palm from. Heart of palm is full of amazing vitamins and nutrients. You can buy it canned or in a glass jar. For this recipe be sure to use whole hearts of palm.
Cabbage Slaw
One of the easiest things to make and dress pretty much any dish up with is a cabbage slaw. This one just uses some chopped Napa cabbage, lime juice, salt, and optional pickled red onions. It is so refreshing and crispy. It works perfectly with the seasoned hearts of palm and adds a freshness to the tacos.
Why is Hearts of Palm Frequently Used as Seafood Replacement?
The texture of hearts of palm naturally lends itself to being a great seafood replacement. It is sturdy on the outside, but soft in texture inside. When you bite into it, it will have a texture similar to a white fish. It’s flavor is slightly salty due to being in a brine so it works well to take on other flavors as well. The appearance of it also looks a bit like a white fish.

Easy Vegan Fish Tacos FAQ
- Is this recipe gluten free? Yes, it is! I used corn tortillas which I highly recommend for these kinds of tacos. I enjoyed the ones from Vista Hermosa.
- Can I air fry or pan fry the hearts of palm? Yes. I baked them to just make it quicker and easier. If you would like to air fry or pan fry them it would be great as well.
- What should I serve these with? I think some rice, guacamole, and margaritas would make this the perfect night. This drink called The Spicy Grapefruit would also be fun.
- Can I replace the hearts of palm? Sure, you could use a firm tofu if you like. While they wouldn’t be the same the tacos would still be delicious.
- How long do these last in the fridge? I ate the leftovers the next day but I wouldn’t eat them past that.

Cindy
These were good and super easy as described. I ran out of seasoning when coating them so I had to make more and then they were way too salty so don’t make my mistake and over season them.

So glad you enjoyed them overall Cindy! thank you for trying them and leaving a review/comment xo
Paul
So so good. How would I go about firming the hearts up a little bit. They were a little soggy and I think it was user error

so glad you liked it! it could be the brand some are mushier than others. so maybe just try a different brand if you can. thank you for making them and leaving a review!
Mia
Hi! This looks really good and I might try to make it, but I can’t find heart of palms in norway (at least not on the websited when I check). Can I switch these with bamboo shoots/slices? 🙂
plantifullybased
hi Mia! i will be honest I have never used bamboo shoots, they do appear to be similar from what i can see. i worry they may be a bit crunchier than hearts of palm. you can always use tofu instead!
