this easy 4 ingredient appetizer is perfect for the holidays! vegan pigs in a blanket are perfect for dipping in ketchup or mustard.

the inspiration
Growing up we always made pigs in a blanket on Christmas Eve. Don’t ask why but they became a Christmas Eve staple in our house. Considering we are Italian it was a bit of an brand choice.
So, when I first went vegan, 9 and a half years ago, I knew I wanted to make some of my favorites for the holidays. Luckily, it wasn’t hard to figure out how to do it and they are super easy to make.

the ingredients
- Vegan Hot Dogs: of course to make some vegan pigs in a blanket we need vegan hot dogs! If you can’t find vegan hot dogs you can also use a vegan sausage.
- Puff Pastry: there are puff pastries out there, like Pepperidge Farm, that do not contain any butter. If you can’t find puff pastry you can also use crescent rolls. Unfortunately, the Pillsbury ones have started using an animal based l-cysteine. So, just find a different brand like Annie’s or you can make them homemade. If you are gluten free the Sweet Loren’s puff pastry is vegan and gluten free.
- Spray Oil: it is nice to give the vegan pigs in a blanket a little hit of spray oil before they bake.
- Minced Onions: the minced onions add flavor and a little seasoning. You can omit or top with any seasoning or topping you like.

which vegan hot dog brand is the best?
I will be honest I really do enjoy the Lightlife vegan hot dogs. I find the flavor to be good and they are pretty easy to find. There are also the Field Roast stadium dogs that are good. If you have any other brands you enjoy, definitely use that.
However, if you cannot find any vegan hot dogs don’t worry. I have a recipe! They are easy to make and so delicious. I had initially planned on using this recipe to make the vegan pigs in a blanket, but then I did get a little lazy. So, whatever route you want to go will be great!
Pigs in a Blanket History
Pigs in a blanket basically started as little sausage pastries in Europe, especially in places like the U.K. and Denmark. They really took off in the U.S. around the mid-1900s, showing up in cookbooks and becoming a go-to party snack. Now they’re just one of those classic, cozy appetizers everyone loves to pop on a plate.
making the vegan pigs in a blanket
These are super easy to make and to be honest there is no wrong way to do it. You just need to wrap the little vegan hot dogs up and bake them!

- Thaw one sheet of puff pastry ahead of time. Carefully, mark out 16 squares in the rectangle with a knife.

- Then, use the knife the cut the rectangles out. I made 16 squares to get 16 vegan pigs in a blanket.

- Cut 4 of the vegan hot dogs into 4 pieces, so you end up with 16 pieces.

- Place a square of the puff pastry in a diamond shape. Then, put one of the pieces of the vegan hotdog on the bottom corner of the puff pastry.

- Roll the puff pastry up.

- Make sure the tail of the puff pastry is tucked and wrapped up. If you find its not sticking, you can add a little drop of water to the puff pastry and it will stick to itself.

- Place the unbaked vegan pigs in a blanket on a lined baking sheet. Spray with oil. Then, top with some minced onion.

- Bake at 400°F for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown. Some of the puff pastry may expand and open up. It is okay, all tastes the same!
customizing the vegan pigs in a blanket
There are so many fun ways to enjoy these little vegan pigs in a blanket. I personally can’t resist them when they are a more classic style like this recipe. However, if you want some extra ideas here are some.
- Make it cheesy. You can add a little vegan cheese on top or underneath the little vegan hot dog in the puff pastry.
- Make it spicy. You can add a slice of jalapeno or top with a little red pepper flakes.
- Change up the dipping sauce. Instead of dipping in ketchup do something fun like vegan nacho cheese, bbq sauce, or a jam.
- Change up the topping. You can totally change the feeling of these vegan pigs in a blanket by using different toppings. Black and white sesame seeds, everything bagel seasoning, sea salt flakes, minced garlic. Have fun with it.

vegan pigs in a blanket faq
Is this recipe allergy friendly?
It does contain soy and gluten. To make it gluten-free use a gluten-free and vegan puff pastry. To make it soy free look at the ingredients in the vegan hot dogs you are using. You can also always make baby carrots to make homemade carrot dogs as a substitute.
What can I do with leftovers?
You can store them in the fridge for up to 2 days. To reheat put them in the oven or an air fryer. I do not recommend freezing the already cooked vegan pigs in a blanket.
How can I make these ahead of time?
You can follow all the steps for making them, then place in the fridge up to 1 day in advance. You can then bake them right before you want to eat them.
