This may sound silly but vegan cheese isn’t just for vegans! There are so many reasons why people may choose vegan cheese over regular cheese. The first reason is allergies or intolerances. So many people are lactose intolerant and this can help them. It can bother peoples sinuses, stomachs, and more.
Another reason may be health. While cheese is delicious (yes, I can even say that as a vegan) it has a lot of cholesterol, salt, saturated fat, and can be high in calories. So, homemade vegan cheese in comparison tends to be lower in calories, no cholesterol, and little to no saturated fat.
And of course there are so many other reasons why people would choose not to eat dairy.
special ingredients you may need
Before you scroll down into these recipes there are two ingredients I want to discuss:
- Agar: this is a seaweed based product. It helps to create the consistency, texture, and firmness in this vegan cheese. It cannot be replaced or substituted. You can easily find it at health food stores or order it online.
- Tapioca Starch/Flour: this will help the vegan cheese to melt a bit better and give some structure to the vegan cheese. You can usually find it in stores like Whole Foods, Sprouts, etc or order it online.
- High Protein Non-Dairy Milk: some, not all, of these recipes will need a high protein non-dairy milk. I like Ripple pea protein but you can also use soy. It will be a non-dairy milk that has at least 7-8g of plant protein per serving. This is important for curdling n0n-dairy milk.
- Nutritional Yeast: adds in B vitamins, cheesiness, and umami. You can get it online or in most stores in either the health food section or baking section.

This vegan queso blanco is creamy, salty, and a little spicy! made without nuts or tofu and it comes together in about 15 minutes.
