making your own homemade almond and oat milk has never been easier! you only need 2 ingredients, a strainer or cheesecloth. they are creamy and so delicious.
Back when I first went vegan in 2016 people were making homemade nut milks and I gave it a try! It is so simple and while I don’t do it very often I still think it is important to know how to make it. You only need water and almonds or oats for whichever you want to make. Of course, you can always get fancy with flavorings and spices!
the ingredients
- Almonds: if you want to make almond milk then of course you will need almonds! You can just regular almonds with the skins on. After they soak they blend up easily and become creamy!
- Rolled Oats: for making oat milk then of course you need oats! You want to use rolled oats not steel cut. This will help ensure a nice creamy oat milk.
- Water: blend it up with the almonds or oats to make the non-dairy milk.
tips for making homemade almond & oat milk
The process for making these is very easy. However, there are a few things that can always help make it even easier. First, you will want to soak the almonds in hot water for at least 30 minutes. You can even start soaking them from the night before if you like. For the oat milk you don’t want to soak the oats at all. You will just throw them into the blender. Speaking of the blender make sure you have a pretty strong one! You want something to be able to really grind the almonds and oats up as finely as possible. This will help it become creamier.
why does my oat milk always come out slimy?
A big complaint when making homemade oat milk is that it comes out slimy. This can happen for a few reasons whether it be over blending, over squeezing, or using warm water. So, first make sure you are only using rolled oats. From there we only want to blend for about 30 seconds. Just enough to get everything broken down, that’s why a good high speed blender is so important. It is also very important to use cold water when blending it. When it comes to separating the oat pulp from the liquid do not squeeze the cheesecloth. You just need to gently move it around to get the liquid out. So, if you do all these things it should ensure no slimy oat milk!
additions to the homemade almond & oat milk
If you want to be a little fancy and throw some fun flavors in there, there are tons of ways to do that! This recipe is just a simple unsweetened and unflavored non-dairy milk. That makes it great for cooking, having with cereal, or in coffee. However, if you want to spice it up a bit here are some fun ideas.
- Dates/Maple Syrup/Agave: if you want to naturally sweeten the non-dairy milk you can add in a date or two, or 1 to 2 tablespoons of maple syrup or agave. This would be great for coffees or cereal.
- Vanilla Extract: if you like getting unsweetened or sweetened vanilla non-dairy milk you can throw in some vanilla extract.
- Cocoa Powder: if you want to make vegan chocolate milk add in sweetener and 1 to 2 tablespoons of cocoa powder when blending.
