if you are a child of the 90s like me then you probably grew up eating dunkaroos! this was the best snack, in my opinion, and while they did bring them back they aren’t vegan. however, these vegan dunkaroos are so easy to make and come out so yummy!
The 90s were all about fun and funky snacks and Dunkaroos were no exception. It was the best when you opened your lunch and saw a pack of Dunkaroos in there. This vegan version is made from vegan yogurt, vegan cream cheese, organic powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and some vegan friendly sprinkles. You can dip any little cookie in there or honestly just enjoy it by the spoonful like I did. According to my non-vegan boyfriend “the dip is dangerous.”
What Are Dunkaroos?
In case you just have no idea what Dunkaroos are, they came out in the 1990. It was a small package that had little cookies and frosting. The cookies are supposed to be dunked into the frosting. The mascot for Dunkaroos was a kangaroo so hence the name dunk-aroos. Over the years they released different flavors but the classic was always vanilla frosting with sprinkles. They were discontinued in 2012 but then in 2020 they actually came back. However, the original recipe does have milk powder in it.
The Ingredients
- Vegan Yogurt: this is the base of the dip. I like using Silk Vanilla Soy Almond Yogurt. The flavor is so delicious. However, you can use any vegan yogurt you like, just make sure that it is either unsweetened or vanilla flavored.
- Vegan Cream Cheese: I use Kite Hill for this or you can even use my homemade recipe! This helps to add some thickness to the frosting.
- Organic Powdered Sugar: this will add sweetness and again help to thicken it a bit.
- Vanilla Extract: adds in vanilla flavor.
- Vegan Friendly Sprinkles: a classic part of a Dunkaroo was the sprinkles. I like the one from Sweetapolita.
- Small Cookies: you can use any small little cookies for dunking! I found one from Annie’s that are birthday cake flavored so that worked out perfectly. They are really yummy.
Vegan Sprinkles
Sprinkles may be one of those things that you think would be vegan and then are surprised to find out they aren’t. It is due to the use of confectioner’s glaze which comes from bug secretion. Also, sometimes the dye in the sprinkles. I am a big fan of Sweetapolita since they have so many vegan friendly sprinkles. You can also check out Whole Foods or natural health food stores! If you need to skip out you can but the sprinkles were important and fun part of the vegan dunkaroos experience.
