one of my favorite things is corn and there is nothing like grilled corn! this blog post will teach you how to grill corn without the husk leaving a beautiful charred corn that is so sweet.
For some reason grilling seems to intimidate people, it used to make me nervous. However, grilling is so easy. To grill corn you really only need corn, olive oil, and salt! It couldn’t be any simpler. I love having a bunch in the fridge so that way if I want one for lunch or cutting up and putting into a salad it is already done.
the ingredients
- Fresh Corn: during this time of year (summer) corn is just so delicious and we have to take full advantage of it! I like to get corn in the husk so that way if I don’t use it for a day or two it stays okay. However, most grocery stores will also sell corn already shucked so you can use that too.
- Olive Oil: the corn only needs a light brushing. This helps to prevent any sticking and aids in browning the corn.
- Flaky Salt: as a garnish after cooking.
finding the best corn tips
Since we are in the beginning of corn season (May to September) you should have no problem finding delicious corn. However, there are a few things you can look for when finding good corn. First, look at how the corn silk looks on top it shouldn’t be dried out or crunchy. It should feel soft. Second, feel the size of the corn. I typically try to grab the corn that is thicker and bigger. Finally, I try to pick the corn that doesn’t look like it’s been opened up or picked over. Some people will shuck and open the corn to get a look at it before buying.
corn prep
There isn’t very much to do when it comes to prepping the corn for grilling. First, you will need to shuck it (removing the husk). While you can grill your corn with the husk on it will result in steaming and boiling the corn instead of charring it. So, I personally prefer to grill corn without the husk. After you have pulled off all the corn silk and husk you may need to snap the bottom of the corn to get it off. Then, I like to run the corn under some cold water to really help me get off anymore of the corn silk. After, you will lightly brush the corn with oil and then you are ready to grill!
how to grill corn
Once your corn prep is all done now it is time to grill! You can either do this on a grill pan or an outdoor grill. We just got a great electric outdoor grill if you don’t want to deal with gas. You will need to bring the grill to between 350°F and 450°F. From there pop the corn on and cook each side for at least 5 to 8 minutes. It requires some patience but the end result is well worth it. Turn each side and then keep letting it cook. Don’t move them around too much otherwise it will take longer to see them char.
