Now, I know what you may be thinking “…really Francesca, a blog post on how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich…” And the answer is “YES!” An uncrustable isn’t just a peanut butter and jelly sandwich it is the most elite of them all. So, while these are of course EXTREMELY easy to make it jazzes up the plain boring pb & j and I have some tips, tricks, and flavor combo ideas for you
what are uncrustables?
If you have never heard of an uncrustable it is a packaged product sold in the freezer section of food stores. They are just little peanut butter and jelly sandwiches that have been cut into circles without the crust and then sealed. They are great because the bread is always so soft and uncrustables truly taste delicious. The in store version is vegan friendly but I like to make my own homemade ones so I can up the protein content and it is just fun to customize your own flavors.
the ingredients
- Bread: first you need to pick your bread of choice. You can use any bread you like I personally opt for a low calorie bread to fit my fitness goals. Just make sure your slice of bread is about 4 inches from top to bottom. I wouldn’t recommend using something that has holes where the fillings can pop out of it.
- Peanut Butter: use any peanut butter you like. I opt for PB2 which is a powdered peanut butter. I like it for a few reasons, again it fits better with my fitness goals, but also it is easier to spread. I wouldn’t recommend using a crunchy peanut butter because the peanuts may tear the bread.
- Grape Jelly: I think a pb & j should consist of grape jelly so that is what I am going with. If you prefer a different jelly flavor like strawberry go for it.
uncrustable molds
If you just search online uncrustable molds or sealer so many will come up. I got a really cute set that had a few different shapes, there was also a dinosaur in my package. These molds aren’t too expensive, most are less than a box of big uncrustables. They have the outer indents in order to make that pressed and sealed designed. If you don’t want to buy a mold, understandably so, you can you use the top of a mason jar or biscuit cutter too. Then you can seal it shut with a fork.
how to prep uncrustables
Making uncrustables is so easy. First, you will lay all out all of your bread. Then you will evenly distribute the peanut butter amongst every piece of bread. I find it best to keep it in a circle in the center, since that is primarily where the sandwich will be coming from. Then, you will add the jelly to half of the bread. In an uncrustable the jelly is sealed in the middle of the peanut butter so that is why we are doing it that way. Then you will add each piece of bread on top to close your sandwiches.
how to cut uncrustables
To cut the uncrustables out may vary slightly depending on the mold you purchase. But essentially you will cut the shape out. Then use the inner piece to press down and make the sealed dent. You will be left with mostly crust. Make sure to carefully line everything up before pressing down to cut the uncrustables out and sealing them.
why you will love this recipe
Not only are these fun for kids but they are fun for adults too! I love keeping them in the freezer so I can grab a quick snack. I like making them homemade because I can make them to fit what I like. The price of uncrustables is also rather steep, so you can get a lot more bang for your buck with homemade ones. There are tons of different flavor combinations to make and you can use anything you want inside. Here are some ideas:
