I am all about easy recipes that look impressive. I think this one is a great example. People would think this is so hard to make but it really isn’t at all. Using store bought pizza dough makes this recipe way less time intensive but if you like to make homemade pizza dough you definitely can. I just know holiday cooking can be chaotic so I wanted to keep this easy for all of you.
Vegan Pesto
There are plenty of options for vegan store bought pesto. I personally love the one from Trader Joe’s it is the Kale Cashew Pesto. I think it is absolutely delicious. But I know there are other brands like this one! Homemade pesto is very easy to make so if you do want to make it homemade I have a recipe for you here. Whichever route you choose to go will be great for this pesto star bread.
Pizza Dough
I find the best place to get pizza dough from is a pizzeria. They will sell you balls of dough and it tends to be the best quality. Trader Joe’s also has very good pizza dough. I used the one from Whole Foods and I have to be honest it wasn’t my favorite. It was very sticky but still did the job just fine. Again if you want to make it homemade you definitely can, I have a recipe here.

Pesto Star Bread
Ingredients
- 22 ounces (630g) pizza dough
- 2 to 3 tablespoons (30 to 45g) vegan pesto
- All purpose flour for dusting
Optional
- ½ tablespoons (7g) olive oil, for brushing on top
- 2 to 3 sprigs fresh parsley chopped for garnish
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 425°F (218°C).
- Separate the dough into 3 even pieces. Roll into a ball.
- On a lightly floured surface roll the dough out to be as thin as you can get it without creating holes. Take a large bowl (about 9 inches) and place it on the dough. Use a sharp knife to cut a circle out. Repeat with the other two pieces of dough.
- Lay one piece of dough down on a parchment lined baking sheet. Spread about 1 to 1 ½ tablespoons of the pesto over it. You don’t need to have too much pesto on there. Then lay another piece of dough down and repeat with spreading the remaining pesto. Finally, lay the last piece of dough on top, do not spread anything on top.
- Take a small bowl and place it in the center of the dough. Use a sharp knife to cut the dough into 16 pieces, long strand shooting off the center. If you need a visual for these steps watch the YouTube video.
- To make the twisted points for the star you will need to take two pieces of dough. Twist them away from one another and then connect them at the top, pinching firmly. Again, if you need to see a visual watch the YouTube video.
- Once all the points of the star have been made you can adjust and move things around as needed and to your preference.
- Bake in the oven for 20 to 25 minutes until golden brown.
- When done if desired brush with oil and garnish with chopped parsley.
